GOLD GUIDE
A Guide to Investment Gold Coins: Quarter, Half and Full Gold
Suat Akın Gold & Jewellery editorial team
Investment gold is sold in standardised coin forms rather than as fine jewellery, with weight and purity set by convention. Quarter, half and full gold are the most common examples of these standard forms.
What are quarter, half, full and Republic gold?
These names describe the size of a minted gold coin. Quarter gold is the smallest common unit; half gold weighs twice as much, and full gold weighs four times as much.
Names such as Reşat, Ata and Cumhuriyet (Republic) gold refer to different mint series. Republic gold is slightly heavier than full gold; it is best to confirm current details on the specific piece you are buying.
Approximate weights
Gross weights for the common gold units are approximately:
- Quarter gold: approximately 1.75 grams
- Half gold: approximately 3.5 grams
- Full gold: approximately 7 grams
- Republic gold coin: approximately 7.2 grams
What to check before buying
It matters that the karat and weight can be confirmed by the jeweller; ask for the current gram measurement at the time of purchase.
The key difference from fine jewellery is that an investment coin's value rests on weight and purity rather than craftsmanship, so check the surface for scratches or deformation together with the seller before buying.
Storage and handover
Keeping investment gold in its original packaging makes it easier to confirm karat and authenticity later. If you are buying in larger quantities, it helps to plan secure storage in advance.
